Man atop water tank in Gujarat’s Chhota Udepur threatens suicide, slips to his death during rescue op
A resident of Chhota Udepur town, had abandoned his alleged suicide bid and was making his way down the water tank when he lost his footing and fell, officials said.
A man who threatened to kill himself from atop a 50-foot-tall water tank in Gujarat’s Chhota Udepur district died on Wednesday after he slipped off a metal ladder while trying to descend after being “convinced” by fire brigade officials to abandon the alleged suicide bid, officials said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a resident of Chhota Udepur town, climbed up the water tank and began threatening to jump, purportedly recreating the famous scene from Hindi film Sholay.
According to officials of the Chhota Udepur fire department, a call was received at 1.20 pm about a man who had climbed up the water tank at Kawant Naka, “threatening suicide for unknown reasons”. Officials from the fire department and the local police station rushed to the spot and tried to counsel the man to abandon the suicide bid and come down

After much effort and convincing, the man agreed to descend and stepped on the metal ladder of the water tank even as two officials of the fire department waited at the lower platform. However, just as the man took a couple of steps down the ladder, he allegedly lost his balance and slipped, falling past the platform and hitting the ground, officials said.
The man sustained severe injuries in the fall and fell unconscious. As fire officials rushed him to the Chhota Udepur referral hospital and thereafter to Vadodara’s SSG hospital, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment
Chhota Udepur Fire Station Officer Yuvrajsinh Gohil said,
“When we reached the spot and tried to talk to him, his reason for taking the extreme step was not clear… We tried to convince him to come down and talk for a resolution, whatever the matter was. He was reluctant at first but agreed after some convincing. However, unfortunately, his foot slipped while coming down the metal ladder.
The fire officers standing at the platform could not grab him as he fell and hit the ground. He sustained head injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital…”.
The Chhota Udepur police station said it has initiated a probe into the incident and the motive behind the alleged suicide attempt
